Medical Center of Newark Podiatrists:
Podiatry
An Overview
Podiatry – a branch of medicine devoted to treating disorders of the foot, ankle, knee, leg, and hip (known as the lower extremity) – at the Medical Center of Newark (MCN) provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment to area residents with medical problems that may compromise the integrity of their lower limbs or general health.
MCN’s team of podiatrists offer compassionate, high-quality inpatient and outpatient clinical care, with the aim of maintaining or improving the foot health status of patients with high-risk foot pathologies that may endanger the integrity of their lower limbs such as
- All types of diabetes
- Lower limb vascular insufficiency (reduced blood flow)
- Sensory neuropathy (a painful condition affecting the feeling in multiple nerves)
- Charcot neuro-arthropathy (a progressive condition almost always due to diabetes, characterized by foot fractures and/or dislocations resulting in deformity and functional changes)
- Previous or active foot ulceration
- Previous or active amputation
The foot is sometimes the first area to manifest signs of potentially serious conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease. Because of this, the podiatrists at MCN – also known as chiropodists – are interested in helping patients alleviate problems, keep their extremities functioning properly, and prevent any further complications. MCN’s Podiatrists treat
- Ankle and foot injuries
- Athlete’s foot
- Bunions
- Calluses
- Corns
- Deformities
- Flat feet
- Foot complaints associated with diseases such as diabetes
- Fractures
- Hammertoes
- Heel spurs, calf and arch problems
- Infections
- Ingrown toenails
- Plantar fasciitis
- Skin problems
- Warts (also known as verrucas)
As both diagnostician and surgeon, MCN’s podiatrists offer a comprehensive foot health service, liaising with other health disciplines when they detect lower extremity symptoms that may be indicators of more serious disorders.
