Battling Against Aches, Pains, Depression, and Fatigue Soldier on this Winter Armed with Vitamin D

Are you achy, tired, or depressed? In the winter months a deficiency of vitamin D is believed to cause of a host of painful maladies including bone and joint pain, fibromyalgia, muscle aches, osteoarthritis, rheumatic disorders, and conditions, including mood disorders.

Though our bodies manufacture vitamin D from the sun’s ultra-violet rays, sunshine is an insufficient source of vitamin D for many people. During winter, this deficiency is worsened by the reduced number of daylight hours. And since very few foods contain this important vitamin, many of us are vitamin D deficient.

A review of nearly two-dozen clinical research studies showed that those with various pain and fatigue syndromes almost always lacked vitamin D. Further, when adequate vitamin D was provided, the aches, pains, and other related issues either disappeared or were substantially reduced in severity.

More prevalent in the winter, chronic fatigue syndrome and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) are also linked to a lack of vitamin D.

While not a complete cure for every condition accompanied by pain, or a replacement for other pain-relief treatments, nearly everyone can benefit from extra vitamin D – at least 1000 IU (international units) per day – during fall and winter. Vitamin D is especially crucial for people suffering from aches and pains, fatigue, or mood disorders.
