Fat Causes Eyelids to Sag
Rejuvenation Procedures Can Help
Baggy eyelids are big business. Close to 241,000 Americans underwent eyelid surgery in 2007, says the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. And now that researchers have discovered the primary cause of eyelid sag, rejuvenation procedures can more effectively address the problem.
Fat expansion in the eye socket is the main culprit, reports the September issue of the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, making the removal of fat a desirable part of eyelid rejuvenation.
It was once believed that weakened ligaments caused baggy eyelids, but the study – conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles – concludes that there is an increase in fat with age, and that this increase is the largest contributor to increased lower eyelid tissue.
The findings of the study – the first to use high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to chart the affects of aging on the face – may alter the way eyelid rejuvenation is carried out.
