The Scent of Early Skin Cancer Detection
Research from two recent studies has shown that skin odors can be used to identify the most common form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma.
Airborne chemical molecules, many of which emit odors, are produced by human skin. Study samples of the air above basal cell tumors were found to have a different chemical profile than those above the skin located in the same areas of healthy subjects.
These findings may eventually enable the early diagnosis of skin cancers. Further understanding of how chemicals related to skin odor work may lead to innovations in anti-aging skin care products.
