Emotional Distress Takes a Toll on Hair, Nails, and Skin Dermatologists Can Provide Long-term Relief

Studies illustrate that a bad mood can affect more than our emotional well-being. Anxiety, depression, and stress is also linked to an increase in hair, nail, and skin conditions. In turn, these secondary problems can cause further stress to someone who’s already emotionally distressed.

When treatment is sought early, however, this potentially vicious cycle can be nipped in the bud.

Thinning hair, brittle nails, and/or inflamed skin can be a physical manifestation of a person’s distress. Hair loss and excessive perspiration, along with brittle nails and ridging of the nails can be caused by stress. Emotional disturbances can also cause skin to become more sensitive, and make existing conditions such as rosacea, acne, and others more inflamed and persistent.

Interestingly, research illustrates that people tend to be more troubled by hair, nail, and skin conditions than by more serious medical problems because skin problems are visible and uncomfortable. As a result, onset or a worsening of hair, nail, and skin conditions brought on by stress can lead to a further worsening of emotional stress, and then a further worsening of hair, nail, and skin problems, and so on.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology's skin academy, failing to address skin problems can affect not only how we look, but also how we feel and function. Traditional dermatologic therapies are recommended along with stress management strategies.

Simultaneous treatment of the skin condition and the stress can help heal the dermatologic problem more rapidly and thoroughly, fostering emotional wellness, and enabling the patient to focus on dealing with the root of their underlying anxiety rather than worrying about their skin.

Cosmetic interventions are also sometimes recommended. Skin rejuvenation procedures can significantly improve a person's appearance, and this can have a positive effect on how a person feels and functions.
