Before Your Procedure
Your physician’s office schedules all surgical and nonsurgical procedures at MCN. When you arrive, enter through our main lobby and check-in at the central registration desk. The scheduler will call you after 2:00 p.m. the day prior to your procedure with a specific time.
Important Reminders
- A Pre-Op nurse will call you prior to your surgery to discuss your medical history. The nurse will ask you about the medications you are taking (be prepared to give the nurse your list including the names of your medications, doses, and how often you take your medications). The nurse will instruct you as to which medications you may take the day of your surgery. Take these medications with a minimal amount of water – please do not drink coffee, tea, or juice. If you have not been contacted by or need to speak to a Pre-Op Nurse, please call 740-522-7800 and we would be happy to answer any questions.
- If you take blood-thinning medications (including Coumadin, Plavix or Aspirin), you must contact your physician to find out when you should discontinue the medication.
- If you have diabetes and take insulin or pills, follow the instructions from the Pre-Op nurse who will call you prior to surgery.
- Do not take potassium supplements or any water pills before your procedure.
- You may bathe or shower the morning of your surgery. Follow any special cleansing instructions your surgeon has given you for your surgery site. You may brush your teeth the morning of your surgery, but do not swallow any water.
- You may wear deodorant. Do not use lotions, powders, creams, cologne, perfume, hairspray, or hair gel the morning of your procedure.
- Please bring a case for your glasses, contacts, and/or hearing aids.

- Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your surgery. This includes gum, mints, candy, water, and tobacco products. Consumption of these products may result in the cancellation of your procedure.
- Do not wear jewelry, including rings or body piercings. Let the staff know if you have rings that will not come off.
- If you have an artificial knee, hip, heart valve, or mitral valve prolapsed, contact your family physician at least 3 days prior to surgery to determine whether or not you need antibiotics prior to surgery.
- Please remove all nail polish before your procedure.
Do not bring valuables to the facility. - Talk to your physician so that you fully understand the procedure. One way to alleviate anxiety is to educate yourself on the procedures, and what will be happening before, during, and after surgery. We want to provide you with resources that will be helpful to you.

Be sure to arrange in advance for a ride home following your procedure.
